theseus's paradox....

Theseus is famous in Greek mythology as the slayer of the Minotaur, a half-man, half-bull monster who lived in the Labyrinth in the island of Crete. According to Plutarch, the ship in which Theseus sailed back to Athens was preserved for many generations, its old planks being replaced by new ones as they decayed.

Now suppose that a few hundred years later, all the original parts of the ship had been replaced, one by one, so that none of the original ship remained. Is the preserved ship still Theseus' ship? Or is it a copy? And if the latter, then at what point did it cease to be Theseus' ship?

i love mythology! i have been reading joseph campbell quite recently! great description! not at all sure how the photo relates to the comment (but it doesn't have to relate in an obvious manner, as far as i'm concerned). i like the way you have composed this photo as well!-- the deviation is quite a pleasant surprise!

i love mythology too...

the title and the photo both refer to the self-discovery i was trying to achieve at the time. and the discovery brings more questions: how much have i changed, am i still the same person, just because i keep changing the decayed planks of my life have i destroyed the real elif, can the new disguises get along with the core of my being.... :D

thank you so much for your comment.

i have asked myself a similar question, but i have to tell you, i'm super-impressed by the rich metaphor you've attached to it!!! it (that particular mythological boat and the planks) is such an original metaphor for that question/subject!!!-- i hope it turns up again in your work! exploring rich metaphors that are tied to personal insight, in the context of visual art and music, is one of my favorite things in life! i could do it all day if i didn't have to pay the bills! anyway, thank you again for sharing!

i name most of my work metaphorically yet sometimes the titles don't make it here.
as you might have noticed, some work in my gallery are not even worth displaying, yet the ones who make it, have such a deep meaning for me that i don't care about the technicalities. :D

i'm going to have to disagree with your statement about having work in your gallery "not even worth displaying." !-- ha, i took another look at your gallery to see just how crazy that statement is :) -- and, just as i thought-- all of your stuff looks great and there is some really strikingly beautiful stuff there! you are too hard on yourself! i'm looking forward to seeing more! :)
